ANCIENT TOMBS AND BAROQUE VILLAGES: CYCLING FROM SANTO LIO NECROPOLIS TO FERLA

Departing from Palazzolo Acreide, you will pedal along peaceful rural roads through olive groves, vineyards, and quiet fields, soaking in the scents and vistas typical of inland Sicily. After a few kilometers, you’ll reach the early Christian Necropolis of Santo Lio—a fascinating archaeological site where rock-cut tombs and ancient settlements bear witness to human presence since the Bronze Age. Here, we will stop for a cultural break and a visit to the cliff-carved tombs, enjoying an atmosphere frozen in time. Heading southwest, the route winds through panoramic roads alongside open countryside and striking vistas, approaching the Pantalica Nature Reserve, Anapo Valley, and Cava Grande Stream area—a region steeped in history and nature. In this area, just off the main path and visible from the road, stands the ancient structure known as the Anaktoron (often called the “Templar’s Tomb” or “Prince’s Palace”)—a truly spectacular site nestled among the remains of the ancient settlement. The final stop of the tour is Ferla, a picturesque Baroque village where you can enjoy a refreshing break, visit ancient churches, and savor local cuisine.
